ORIGIN
The Magazine Club was born in the heart of every home: the kitchen. This particular kitchen is located in via Maggio, in the historic center of Florence, Italy.
The warmth and freedom of a kitchen in a safe home provided the right environment for something to emerge before we ourselves even knew what it was we were doing.
What we all had in common was a respect for learning traditional techniques, so that we may channel the freshness of the present as masterfully as we can.
Week after we week, every Monday for 63 consecutive mondays, artists gathered around the same table that had but two rules:
- Every contribution is made here, live, on the spot. No works from yesterday, no edits tomorrow, no send-its from those not in this energy field.
- Only analogue tools used to create; nothing digital, nothing out of a pixel, everything is held in real life matter, channeled through the hands of the creative.
The key was downloading the here and now, through the channels of the connected individual, executed in as masterfully technical way as possible.
What this ritual produced, was a "Libro di Artista", which was created and published every week. These "artist books" are a longstanding Italian tradition, a physical report of the salon sessions creatives have been holding behind the scenes for centuries - and ours is through art. Our artist books are limited to 100 editions per episode, and all are hand-numbered and stamped. The copies are printed by artisans in Florence, Italy.
The Magazine Club's first exhibition paid hommage to this origin, aptly calling it "At The Kitchen Table". This monthlong exhibition took place in a 600 year old Florentine Palazzo. It told the story of how a little bit of discipline turned these spontaneous artist meetings into a ritual, resulting in a snapshot of the spirit of the moment in print.
It opened up our private kitchen table to be shared with a public.
DEVELOPMENT
Since its unknowing beginning at that Florentine kitchen table,The Magazine Club has ventured into places beyond the hearth of the home.
Currently, we are being sold in The South Street Seaport museum's Bowne & Co in New York City, after a collaboration with its historical heritage museum.
We have made four menus to date for the three michelin star chef Sergio Herman for his most private restaurant in Antwerp.
The beautiful gallery Hauser & Wirth sells us in their first publishing location in Chelsea, New York City.
We've served as support for rising star, the Norwegian painter Mathias "Masarati" for his first Florence show in Spazio Sasetti.
We've sold out at Iconic Magazines, a strange and wonderful magazine Mecca open 24/7 that is a convenience store in the middle of NYC, but also sells rare magazines.
We have serial collectors in Ibiza, Florence, New York, Tuscany, Sao Paolo, Antwerp, Amsterdam and more.
The members of the gang have each continued to explore their own personal talents. From drawing and painting courses, to learning how to sculpt, to becoming mothers, to publishing their own books, to learning how to cook, to having their esoteric research papers published, to standing up to their fathers, to standing down to their mothers, to finding ways to shed and let the innate light within come out more, and more, and more, and it is an honour to behold.
Monday episodes are still made, but just not every Monday any more, like that wild 63 consecutive start.
